What's the Difference in a Progressive Action Drawer slide and a Telescopic Action

The terms “progressive action” and “telescopic action” refer to different mechanisms in drawer slides, which effect how the drawers move and how they feel when opened and closed. Progressive slides usually have rollers that synchronize the movement of the components. Whereas the telescopic pulls the parts of the slide on ball bearings.

Progressive Drawer Slides:

Mechanism: Progressive action drawer slides feature a smooth, continuous movement as the drawer is pulled open. This is achieved by having all the moving parts, including the inner, intermediate, and outer members, move simultaneously from the beginning to the end of the slide’s travel. This prevents the bang and hang of one member colliding with the next as it starts to pull the member behind it.

User Experience: The motion is fluid and seamless, with no noticeable changes in resistance as the drawer is opened or closed. This type of slide often provides a more premium feel due to the consistent and smooth operation.

Applications: Progressive action slides are commonly used in high-end furniture, cabinetry, premium toolboxes and applications where a smooth and refined user experience is desired.

Telescopic Drawer Slides:

Mechanism: Telescopic action drawer slides extend in a series of steps, similar to how a telescope extends. Typically, the inner member moves first, followed by the intermediate member, and then the outer member, depending on the slide’s construction.

User Experience: The movement is less fluid compared to progressive action slides, as you may notice a slight transition between each stage of the slide’s extension. This can create a more segmented or “stepped” feeling as the drawer is pulled open or pushed closed.

Applications: Telescopic slides are widely used in both residential and industrial settings. They are durable and can support heavier loads, making them suitable for applications like toolboxes, kitchen drawers, and filing cabinets.

In summary, the main difference between telescopic and progressive drawer slides lies in the smoothness and feel of the drawer’s motion. Progressive action slides offer a seamless experience, while telescopic action slides have a more step-by-step movement.
